How to open a broken VW Golf glove compartment?
There are four screws under the glove box. Does the exit compartment if I remove the 4 screws?
Probably not, if very late model Golf / Jetta / Passat. It has two prongs that push out on either side of the door left and right of the door entering the mounting board. Now the best bet is to break the glove box handle assembly out, if you remove the glove compartment handle you'll see two plastic "legs" protruding into the cavity that is located on the handle. The legs should have a slight curve to them, stick your finger, screwdriver or whatever between the two "j" shaped leg (which almost touch each other) and if memory serves me push down toward the floor. This should retract legs in the door and you should be able to open the glove box door. Now, you must delete the ratchet mechanism of the door, sometimes you can "cheat" by removing only the arm the door without removing the whole box set, sometimes not. The reason that the door was broken, probably in the first place is that it has opened the door without actually sitting in FRNT the glove with two fingers to open it, one on each side of the lock and pulling the handle with the same force on both sides of the handle. Now, I realize this sounds crazy, But I am very seriously. The mechanism of the glove is more than engineering, you have to think like the Germans and the Germans do things like, if you do, then almost you elimate all the problems of most homeowners. I know, I used to teach the owners of new vehicles purchased in our dealership's how to use the elements to avoid problems, but has worked well, we had fewer problems than most dealers with broken items.
