So , with a nucular bomb , I see atoms are broken down in a chain reaction . If you visually looked at the?
amount of Atoms , that are going to do this Chain Reaction , what would those atoms look like Visually .
Would it be the size of a pea , a golf ball ?
And , what kind of Atoms of material is used , that they want to slit for this reaction .
My curiosity in all of this , is Size .
I just want to visually get a ideal . It obvious by sight or visual how much destruction happens , you can see that , visually .
But just want to see , how much material , of the Atoms , because that is where the power is being unlocked , and I guess uranium is the key to unlock the power .
I just visually what a ideal of the size of the Atoms or material , so are talking about a pea , and Golf Ball Size of material , a base ball ?
In nuclear fission, critical mass, which means how much nuclear fuel you need to make a bomb, depends on how close the atoms are to each other. The closer they are to each other, the fewer of them you need. So you can’t say absolutely it’s baseball-sized or any other such size, because it depends on how close the atoms are to each other at the time the explosion starts.
In nuclear fusion, the amount of nuclear fuel only affects how big the explosion will be. There is no minimum size, except that it has to be big enough that the molecules will tend in their vibrations to approach each other at random.
A bigger factor in fusion is that you need more heat than is available in a small size, to start the fusion reaction, which is not a chain reaction, except that it uses heat and provides heat, so it could be construed as a chain reaction of making heat and using it.
The biggest bang comes from bombs that use both fission and fusion. The radiation from the fusion makes the fission happen faster, so more of it can happen before the explosion terminates it. And the heat needed for the fusion comes partly from the fission. So the fission and fusion work together in synergy, making the bomb a lot more powerful than the fission or fusion component alone would be.
To the person who said we would never need another drop of oil or coal if we could control nuclear fusion, you might have some “con”fusion. We already have nuclear fusion reactors, but they aren’t yet good enough to be feasible for commercial use. But we have one big one that is good enough. It’s good enough in fact to provide all the power needed on Earth for millions of years. It’s the sun.
