Tecina Golf on the island of Gomera, a short ferry ride from Tenerife is a spectacular 18 hole championship Golf Course. The Tecina Golf Course is stunningly perched on the cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean and from every hole there are amazing views of the Ocean the Gomeran landscape and Mount Tiede in Tenerife.
Scottish golf architect Donald Steel designed this course, using his wealth of experience of designing courses through out Europe, and the setting for this course can not be talked about enough. The course is constructed in some of the most difficult terrain and all credit to everyone involved in this project.
The course is unique in the fact that you continue playing down hill towards the sea, so that all the greens face the sea and the Ocean is constantly in view, something that not many courses in the world can say. You start the round by taking your buggy or being driven 2 km uphill to the first tee and then slowly play back to the 18th where the club house is located.
Tenerife and the island of Gomera enjoy an average temperature of 23 degrees with very little variation through out the year. The rainfall is very low and humidity is kept low due to the coastal breezes (winds on some days).
Both Tenerife and the island of Gomera are fantastic places to visit for a golf holiday, or just a holiday with beautiful resorts and sandy beaches. Tenerife is naturally the busier island with an international airport and over six courses to choose from.
Gomera has one course, Tecina Golf Course, and the following are some is information on some of the beautiful and challenging holes, where to play and where to stay away from.
Hole 1 is a great starting hole and gives an indication of what this course is about. From the first tee of Tecina Golf the surrounding landscape and the Atlantic Ocean dominates the view with the golf course snaking downwards. The fairway is wide and undulating and you want to be positioned on the right hand side. The approach is over an off the green bunker with the left side of the green protected.
Hole 10 starts from a high tee and the hole plays downhill to a green that seems to be suspended in mad air. The fairway is split with barranco (rough rocky land) in front of the green making the clubbing for the approach shot important. Too long you are over the cliff!
Hole 11 is a par three played slightly uphill with the amazing green cut into the volcanic rock which is made more dramatic by being left exposed. The left side is protected by a bunker and the green is very undulating.
Hole 12 is a par 4 dog leg to the right and also has a sudden drop in its level making the correct length of tee shot important. This is another green with nothing but a sheer drop behind the green.
Hole 16 is stroke index one and is probably the toughest hole on the course. The hole plays long with a slight incline all the way. The left side is beautifully protected by a line of palm trees and there is a bunker to the right.
A round finishes at Tecina golf with more fantastic views with Mount Tiede on Tenerife and naturally a downhill hole. This is defiantly one of the most beautiful holes; the approach shot to the green is tricky with some palm trees in front and a bunker protecting the right.
Tecina Golf Course is a beautiful course which is enjoyable and challenging and offers spectacular scenery on every hole you play.
