What brand / model of Golf Clubs can be recommended for a beginner.?
I've played on and off for about 5 years. I decided to have seroius little one now and take some lessons and get a set of clubs fitted to me, but do not want to spend much money. Also the views on steel or graphite shafts?
My recommendation is to not take the recommendations of other players about brands or models, because we all have our own preferences. To emphasize this point, a regular player in my ball four believes the Callaway Big Bertha I use are absolutely useless, but I like and they have helped me to cut 6 strokes of my disability in last year! Since you are "getting worse" and the intention to get fitted, I recommend you go to a place that can try different brands and models, while fits you. Find clubs that match your price and give the best results for the money. Last year's model shopping a discount is the best way to reduce costs without sacrificing quality and performance (despite what the manufacturers write in their announcements of new models.) steel rods are cheaper and I am sure you will not notice any benefit by paying more for graphite. Having regard to the right axis of bending in the speed of your swing is much more important and should not cost you anything extra!
