Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

I (Dave) was thinking about backing big-hitting Alvaro Quiros in this week’s Dubai World Championship given that the course is a million miles long and the Spaniard was a handy tied eighth in Shanghai a fortnight ago. During a Facebook chat I told this to my mate Nick, who I hadn’t heard from in a while. “Hold your horses chief,” he wrote and when I asked “why” he said his next door neighbours are none other than Alvaro’s mum and dad! While mother Quiros had been offering Nick some meatballs (’Albondigas’ as Tapas fans will know), father Quiros was saying that, unlike the meatballs, his son’s game was a bit off. Although being put off my bet, more exciting was the invite from Nick to play a round with him and Senor Quiros sometime. Wonder if he hits it a mile like his son? And will meatballs be on the menu after the round?

In the pink

For a while Paula Creamer’s twitter account was blocked, something that normally indicates “illegal” activity (in a purely twitter sense). It’s hard to imagine anyone less likely to be guilty of that sort of thing. Now she is back and proving herself one of golf’s best tweeters. In the last week we’ve learned more about her pink obsession. We know she likes to wear pink, we know she plays a pink ball on Sundays, but did you know her favourite breakfast cereal is also pink? She has also revealed how it pays to make an effort if you’re ever lucky enough to meet her. At the conclusion of every tournament she gives her watch to a waiting fan. This week a little girl in Panther ears got the watch. And a guy who turned up to a signing session wearing a pink t-shirt got himself tweeted round the world in a very nice photo with Paula.

Quiet please!

Creamer, of course, is one of the stars of the Solheim Cup and this week the LET launched the 2011 Solheim Cup website. There may be over 600 days until the two teams fight it out at Killeen Castle but – as the site says – “Ireland is waiting for you!” Tickets are already on sale at a reduced rate, but those of you keen to get closer to the action might be tempted to sign up as a volunteer. If you’ve always had the urge to stop people taking photographs, using mobile phones or walking across fairways, here’s your chance. Or perhaps you just want to be near enough to the players to hear what Christina Kim is saying to Michelle Wie. Maybe you won’t need to be too close to hear that though …

Spanish Inquisition

Tiger would likely make it onto plenty of lists if people were polled on the greatest men ever to have lived. However, when golf nut Chris Evans was asked for his top 10 by ShortList magazine he had a somewhat surprise entry at No.2 – Miguel Angel Jimenez. Said the DJ: “One of the world’s best golfers, he strides around the courses of the Earth with his chest puffed out and his head held high. I’m not sure if he’s more like a matador or the bull itself but either way he is the man. He is super-cool and I have never seen him in a bad mood, which is unheard of for a golfer. I met him once when he heard I was a fan and he came over to say hello, but I was completely lost for words.” Top of Chris’ list is Albert Einstein while Jimenez is above the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Walt Disney and Paul McCartney.

European Tour Q-school

This week sees the start of the second stage of the European Tour’s Q-school at four venues in Spain. It is known amongst the players as the most fraught stage – the competent pros expect themselves to have the quality to get through stage one, but they are wary of a little bad luck or poor course conditioning at the second stage; they feel the longer six-round final stage, at high quality courses, will be a fair test. As usual there are plenty of regular faces getting ready to tee off (the likes of Santiago Luna and Iain Pyman) plus some new kids on the block too (Sam Hutsby and Stiggy Hodgson). Skybet are offering prices this week and a few players might be worth a second glance. Tom Whitehouse (66/1) isn’t in great form but he does love Dave Thomas-designed courses and he’s playing one at Haciendo del Alamo. The Swedish Golfing Federation send their young teams to use the superb facilities at Arcos Gardens, which will suit the highly-rated Niklas Lemke (33/1) who’s been through the ranks. And at the Olazabal-designed Costa Ballena consider Gregory Molteni (100/1) whose form is getting better and who contendedl in a Challenge Tour event on Olazabal’s Retamares layout last year.
